The most important writing lesson I ever learned was not in a screenwriting class, but a fiction class.

This was senior year of college.  Most of us had already been accepted into grad school of some sort. We felt powerful, we felt talented, and most of all, we felt artistic.

It was the advanced fiction workshop, and we did an entire round of workshops with everyone’s best stories, their most advanced work, their most polished pieces. It was very technical and, most of all, very artistic.

IE: They were boring pieces of pretentious crap.

Now the teacher was either a genius OR was tired of our shit, and decided to give us a challenge.  Flash fiction, he said. Write something as quickly as possible.  Make it stupid.  Make it not mean a thing, just be a quick little blast of words. 

And, of course, we all got stupid.  Little one and two pages of prose without the barriers that it must be good. Little flashes of characters, little bits of scenarios.

And they were electric.  All of them. So interesting, so vivid, not held back by the need to write important things or artistic things. 

One sticks in my mind even today.  The guys original piece was a thinky, thoughtful piece relating the breaking up of threesomes to volcanoes and uncontrolled eruptions that was just annoying to read. But his flash fiction was this three page bit about a homeless man who stole a truck full of coca cola and had to bribe people to drink the soda so he could return the cans to recycling so he could afford one night with the prostitute he loved.

It was funny, it was heartfelt, and it was so, so, so well written.

And just that one little bit of advice, the write something short and stupid, changed a ton of people’s writing styles for the better.

It was amazing. So go.  Go write something small.  Go write something that’s not artistic.  Go write something stupid. Go have fun.

I don’t think you understand just how beyond painful what UNSECO is doing.

I really don’t think you get it. Because I think that if you understood then you would care because the idea that you get and you just don’t care is just to unbearable.

What they are doing is not only erasing history, not only erasing archaeological evidence, but they are erasing my people.

They are ripping the very heart of my people out and then spitting on it.

They are taking our words that we say every year on Passover “Next Year in Jerusalem” are turning the words to ash in our mouths.

They are trying to destroy thousands of years of history and culutre.

We just finished the most Holy Day of Year and this is what greats us.

Here is the reality Jews are one of the oldest ethnic groups, the second oldest monotheist religion, and have been in Diaspora for the longest amount of time.

Hatred of Jews, antisemitism, predates pretty much every kinda hatred. It predates all other forms of racism and it predates misogyny.

Every single great empire has tried and failed to kill us.

So yes so we Jews shall survive this.

But let me ask you this.

What makes you think you will so safe.

What makes you think if you are a diasporaic people that one day they won’t say you have no connection to your homeland.

What makes you think they won’t say your history is a lie, your culutre is false, and that in fact you were never there.

Maybe you don’t give a fuck about Jews, but don’t feel safe because today the UN is doing this to us and I can’t help but wonder which minority ethnic group is next.

Which one of the many of us that was stolen and taken in chains away from your homes and your people, from your land and your language, from culutre and your roots will be next.

Jewish history is filled with us being raped, stolen, oppressed, murdered, and denial of history.

This is sadly just another heart-wrenching chapter in our over 4 thousand year old history.

But what chapter will be next in your history. Who is to say that when they are done with us they won’t come for you.

So regardless if you give a fuck or don’t give about Jews, you should at least care because who knows which one you are next.

This is the exact reason why I maintain my position that Martha was not, under any circumstances, the companion.

She was the doctor.

Now I know that he’s always the same man at the core after regenerations  so on and so forth, but when it really boils down, the doctor isn’t a timelord, the doctor is an idea. At least in the RTD era, every companion at one point or another, has had to make the choice to become the doctor.

Rose Became the Doctor when she accepted her fate as the bad wolf.

Mickey became the doctor when he stayed in the parallel universe.

Donna became the doctor during the meta-crisis.

Jack became the doctor when he ‘died’  for the first time trying to save everyone before Rose destroyed the Daleks.

But Martha? Martha was different, Martha was special. Martha never chose to become the doctor, because that was who she always was in her heart; and substantially she was the only companion of the RTD era who didn’t need to be saved by either the timelord doctor or TARDIS intervention (in the case of Jack, seeing as it was the badwolf, who brought him back).
